MTN Ghana MoMo API – Real-Time Notifications for Incoming USSD Payments to Merchant Wallets

Hello MTN MoMo Developer Support Team,

I am developing a multi-tenant order management and POS platform for businesses in Ghana that primarily conduct sales through WhatsApp.

Our platform allows multiple independent businesses to register, manage customer orders, and track payments. Each business may have multiple MTN MoMo numbers for receiving payments.

Our current payment process:

  1. Customers place orders with businesses through WhatsApp.

  2. The business manually records the order in our platform.

  3. The customer sends payment directly to the business's MTN MoMo number using the traditional USSD (*170#) process.

  4. The business manually confirms receipt of the payment and updates the order status.

What we want to achieve:

We want to integrate with MTN MoMo so that our backend can automatically detect incoming payments to each business's registered MoMo wallet, retrieve the transaction details, and help match those payments to orders.

Importantly, we do not want to initiate payment requests through the Collections API or redirect customers to an online checkout. We want customers to continue making payments directly through USSD as they currently do.

Our questions are:

  1. Does MTN Ghana provide an API or webhook that notifies third-party systems whenever a customer independently sends money to a registered MoMo merchant wallet through USSD?

  2. Is there an API that allows authorized applications to retrieve incoming transaction history for a specific MoMo wallet, including payments not initiated through the Collections API?

  3. Are these capabilities available for personal MoMo wallets, or only for registered MoMo merchant accounts?

  4. If merchant registration is required, can our platform integrate multiple independent merchant accounts, with each business authorizing access to its own transaction data?

  5. Does MTN offer a partner or aggregator integration that would allow our platform to monitor transactions across multiple authorized merchant wallets?

  6. If such an integration exists, what are the onboarding requirements, API documentation, approval procedures, and associated fees?

Our primary requirement is read-only access to incoming payment information, preferably through real-time webhook notifications or a transaction-history API.

We would appreciate guidance on whether this functionality is currently supported in Ghana and which MTN API product or partnership arrangement would be most suitable.

Thank you for your assistance.
